Mixtape: Best songs about having babies

What happens when a singer has a baby? He sits down and records a song. James Taylor about “sweet baby James”, and Scott Stapp from Creed has his “arms wide open.” These are the 5 best songs for parents to-be or those who’ve just welcomed a newborn into the world.

Pregnancy and having babies are such emotional topics that many singers have written a song about it. It touches everyone, even if it’s not your own child (James Taylor sings about his nephew). The lyrics are often about love, hope, and the future. Except for Loudon Wainwright III, he sings about breastfeeding.

By the way, can anyone recommend female singers? Or do they not write such songs?

James Taylor: Sweet Baby James

Taylor wrote the song when his brother named his baby after him, James. “Goodnight you moonlight ladies, Rockabye sweet baby James. Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose. Won’t you let me go down in my dreams. And rockabye sweet baby James.”

Scott Stapp (Creed): With Arms Wide Open

The Creed singer wrote the song when he heard his he was going to be a father. “Well I just heard the news today. It seems my life is going to change. I close my eyes, begin to pray. Then tears of joy stream down my face.”

David Bowie: Kooks

David Bowie wrote the song for his baby boy Duncan in the 70s. “We bought a lot of things to keep you warm and dry. And a funny old crib on which the paint won’t dry. I bought you a pair of shoes. A trumpet you can blow. And a book of rules. On what to say to people when they pick on you.”

Loudon Wainwright III: Rufus is a Tit Man

This song is for his son Rufus. It’s the most funny song I’ve ever heard about newborn babies – he sings about breastfeeding. “You can tell by the way the boy burps that it’s gotta taste fine.”

John Lennon: Beautiful Boy

The song was written for Lennon’s son Sean, his only child with Yoko Ono. It contains one of the most famous quotes that made it on T-Shirts and fridge magnets: “Life is just what happens to you, while your busy making other plans.”

This post is dedicated to two friends of mine, S+N who are going to be parents soon, and JQ who has the most amazing little-baby boy as you can see from the pictures he allowed me to use.
